4A - Forming An Opportunity Belief

The Beginning Point Why do people still die of cancer? I have a problem with that... And we all do. Description There is an opportunity to tell stories of remarkable individuals who give vast contributions to the medical field. These are the right people to ask the question above. The unmet need is that medicine has yet to be capable of curing many people from cancer.  Cancer patients certainly are the ones who have the need; This need has existed ever since humans sought to understand and cure maladies - cancer being the emperor of all; The world has been working hard against cancer. Specially since the 70's, upon Nixon's efforts in designating billions of dollars towards the war on cancer, billions more have been spent on the understanding of the disease as well as on the development of new therapies. Today, most cancers are curable, yet it is still the second major cause of death among Americans. The answer to: "why do people still die of cancer?" i...

3A - Your Entrepreneurship Story

Image
The story I want to tell is the same as the reason for my enrollment in this class. Recently, I have started this nonprofit called Heroes of Medicine Foundation. www.heroesofmedicine.org The idea is simple: It is about telling stories of remarkable individuals in medicine, highlighting their lives, or simply their thoughts. I have recently moved to Gainesville from Boston, where I used to work as a research slave at Harvard Medical School. While there, I thought it would be interesting to film interviews of highly credible doctors and scientists. Most importantly, have them talk about the flaws of modern medicine as to create awareness. I then fell in love with telling stories of resilience and sacrifice... Patient stories. There was an opportunity to do it here at our beloved Shands Children's Hospital with the added advantage of finishing up my undergraduate degree. Here I am (:  I hope this class helps me understand more about the art of entrepreneurship.

2A - Bug List

Here I write 20 bugs in medicine that deeply bother me, divided into four main categories. Research Research takes too long to be translated into therapies; Mice models are overrated; Science does not have enough funding; Most experiments a dedicated, intelligent scientist does, fail; A minority of experimental cancer drugs make into clinics. WHY: It is the onus of the empirical method; Scientists spend years being told that in order to publish, they need mice validation; US government spends trillions of dollars in wars instead of targeting the two greatest american killers: cardiovascular diseases and cancer. It is part of science. Even the most talented scientist is no match for Mother Nature. For decades, we have been testing cancer drugs as single agents and on patients who failed all other therapies. People are changing this now but it still happens, unfortunately. Clinics Patients share tiny waiting rooms. It is both uncomfortable and dangerous; Patient...
