11A – Idea Napkin No. 1

1) You.
I am an international student from Brazil, a student of physiology and medical research. I have the talent and burden of perfectionism. My idea for business (nonprofit) is what I plan to do for the rest of my life.
2) What are you offering to customers?
I make videos about interesting individuals in medicine, mostly patients. Highlighting someone's journey, even if upon imminent death, is a powerful tool to provide comfort, inspiration, and awareness not only to that person, but also anyone else.
3) Who are you offering it to?
I am virtually offering it to anyone. However, those who have a professional or personal relationship with medicine will find it more appealing. In other words, people who work in the medical field and people who are forced into it, like patients.
4) Why do they care?
I would make an important distinction in that those who I am offering my services to are not the ones paying for it. Philanthropists donate to my non profit so I can highlight the lives of patients at no cost for them. I would never want to be one more medical bill, which is mostly why they care. Those who donate money, however, do so because they believe in the cause. They feel compelled to support palliative care.
5) What are your core competencies?
What sets me apart from everyone else is my unique perspective. I have received treatment for one of the most aggressive blood cancers, and have worked as a research fellow for a few years before diving into this filmmaking endeavor. And I do have something that no one else in the medical community has. I have the capacity to make videos of patients in the most vulnerable moments, sometimes days before death. This is no only a strictly prohibited practice in any hospital, but also one that few people can mentally do. I have found, through empathy and thousands of hours of handwork, a way to intertwine the beauty of life with the ugliness of sickness.

  1. Wow. I have yet to view past your first video, but hearing that you have filmed people days before death is astonishing. I do not know much about non-profits and how they can function, but from what you say you are doing it is admirable. One question I have is, are all people going to donate? Would they feel compelled to give money to your non-profit?
