14A – Halfway Reflection

Tenaciousness

  • The competency aspect of tenaciousness speaks to time management, in my view. This course has required us to write and reflect methodically every week. In all honesty, I have yet to perform as well as I would like to. It has been hard to be tenacious. Sometimes I look at squirrels and I will admit: I wish I was one. You own your own tree, invade others, conquer enemies and scare lizards away. The process of becoming a tenacious person is not that appealing, it is so hard!

  • I would say I have become tenacious because I have sacrificed absolutely everything for my idea to work. I haven't seen my family in the past five years; my girlfriend broke up with me after 4 years together because all I did was work; I have absolutely destroyed my GPA; I have abandoned a career as a scientist. Today, all I have is this idea and a few thousand dollars of funding for it. After choosing all of such sacrifices, to not be tenacious has ceased to be an option. It is one failure upon another, with one success every blue moon... but what will I do? It's either that or homelessness. It's either that or death.

  • If I were to humbly give a tip. It would be just one, not three: choose your sacrifices. Decide what you need to compromise in order to make your dream a reality. Once you do that, the weight of every single sacrifice on your back will force you to be tenacious - it would never be an option.

  1. Hi Francisco. I agree with you that this course has required us to write and reflect each week. The impending deadline at the same time each week can be daunting at first glance. But it is also an opportunity to plan ahead to make the class fit your schedule and work ahead if you choose. Admittedly, I haven’t worked ahead yet, but I plan to going forward. Spring break provides a great opportunity to work ahead and save yourself time and stress later.

  2. Hey Francisco,
I think you advise is great. It is true, in order to reach your dreams you are going to have to sacrifice. People need to understand that and have their priorities in order that that they understand what the they sacrificing and have the ability to be okay with those sacrifices. I also love the picture of the MMA squirrel.

  3. Hey Francisco,

I thought it was funny that you wanted to be a squirrel but was also a great analogy. Also everything you have sacrificed is crazy. You have dedicated your life to this and hopefully your tenacity will work out. You sound very driven.
